A bounty hunter is a person that tracks down fugitives from the law.
People released on bail pending a trial often leave town or otherwise attempt to escape from the legal system. Other people may try to escape a subpoena, summons, or arrest warrant.
This is when a bounty hunter (officially, a bail enforcement agent) is called upon to track down and apprehend these fugitives. Sometimes considerable force is required to encourage a person to return to face legal proceedings.
